Title: An Unknown Man

Creator: English School (18th century)

Location repository: Art Gallery of Western Australia

Repository work id number: 974/P22

Title type: repository

Attribution qualifier:

Culture: British

Descriptive note: Formerly attributed to Peter Monamy (c. 1690-1749) by whom no portraits are known, but who might have painted the marine background. The sitter was formerly identified as William Dampier but this is untenable. It is probable that the sitter was a London merchant and his name might be reconstructed from the rubbed inscription, which includes London on the letter in his hand.
