Descriptive note: Red chalk. Watteau's graphic style reflected the naturalism of the Italian Bolognese school, mediated through the tidier protocols of French academic drafting technique. Two of the figures in this sheet relate to his canvas, 'Love at the Theatre Francais'. (Art Gallery Handbook, 1999) The Art of Gallery of New South Wales have a list of provenance. From Richard s. Owen, 1927, Paris/France Private Collection, England, to James Oswald Fairfax (Australia, b. 1933), 15 May 1989-31 Aug 1993, Bowral/ New South Wales/ Australia, Gift of James Fairfax 1993.
