Descriptive note: On timber. Born in Antwerp in 1564, Momper became one of the leading Flemish landscape painters in a time when realistic depiction of the landscape was favoured over the mannerist ideas of the past. In the early seventeenth century Antwerp was a major European art production centre, and was organised around the guild workshop system. Artists specialised in either figure painting or the construction of wood panels and supports. As a result attribution is difficult, particularly when the mark or monogram of the workshop master is not present on the panel. In this painting, the landscape has been attributed to Joos de Momper, while the figure were executed by another artisan. Purchased 2004 with funds from the Airey family through the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation
