Descriptive note: Encased in oval shaped gilt frame with glass front. At the top of the frame are two metal loops (1.2 cm) to suspend or hang frame. Henry M.C. Alexander believed that the portrait was painted by John Singleton Copley the elder. Transferred from Australian Museum, Oct. 1955. Purchased by Sir Saul Samuel (1820-1900), New South Wales Agent-General in London, in 1887 from Rear-Admiral Henry M.C. Alexander who stated it had been obtained from a dealer in Cork to whom it was sold by Mrs Elizabeth Cook (Captain Cook's widow), when she was in poor circumstances.
