Acquisition: acquired from the Clifford family of Chudleigh in 1964

Binding: 17c. calf, thought to be in the style of Samuel Mearne's bindery; covers bear blind-tooled handles and floral arabesques; remains of silk ties; spine is gilt.

Condition: Edges trimmed and gilded. Worm-holes in fols 1-9; text on 1r.-3v. washed off.

Deco desc: red rubrics; brown, and red ink entries in the Calendar; caps, fill-ins, initials in white, mauve, blue, gold; ivy-leaf sprays in gold, green, black, blue, mauve, and white for most of the large initials, while sheets with miniatures are provided with full borders acanthus sprays, flowers, birds and, sometimes, insects and grotesques. The frame around 25r. has been supplied from another contemporary MS. The miniatures on 25 r. and 43 r. have been cut out at an early period in the history of the volume and then remounted. There are twelve miniatures (90 x 66mm.) by two French artists, the more accomplished of whom painted the Annunciation (25r.), Visitation (34r.), Shepherds (43r.), Nativity (47r.), Magi (Sir.), Flight (55r.), Presentation (59r.), David playing the harp (70r.), Crucifixion (86r.), Pentecost (93r.), Job on the dunghill (97r.). The second artist provided the Pietˆ on 141r.
