Binding: English 17c red morocco over boards gilt corner-pieces, coiled rope enclosing anchor with the initials W. C. (see below) and clasped hands, spine gilt, remains of green silk ties

Deco desc: a few red rubrics; letters of running book titles and numbers alternately red, and blue; initials alternately red and blue with blue penwork or blue and red with red penwork, 1r. carries a coloured I with a full-length marginal panel of intertwined tendrils in brown, blue and green, with two grotesques incorporated in the convolutions.

Dimensions: 162 x 110 mm; fls.256 and 274 fold out at the foot to accommodate notes

Provenance: the monogram on the cover could be that of William Clifford of Boscombe, lower margin of 1r. has a stamp C surmounted by a coronet while inside the front cover is the armorial book-plate of the Clifford family of Chudleigh: chequy or and azur, a fesse gules, supported by two wyverns and the motto SEMPER PARATUS;
