Acquisition: R. A. Crouch presented the volume in 1944

Binding: Edges trimmed, 16c. binding of oak boards (10mm. thick) with bevelled edges; brass centre-piece and corner-pieces on the covers; two old leather straps with two pins in the front cover. Between the straps on the cover edge is a brass strip. Spine is of pigskin. Covers bear centre panel with busts, floral designs and apostles seen full length, all in blind.


Collation: (9)2-4 (8)5 (7)6-7 (6)8 (4)9-10 (7)11 (5)12 (8)13 (9)14 (7)15 (10)16 (9)17-20 (6)21 (9)22 Thirty-nine sheets are missing from the original foliation: quire 2 lacks its first, quire 3, its sixth, quire 4, its seventh, quire 5, its fourth and ninth, quire 6, its second, eighth and ninth, quire 7, its first, fourth and sixth, quire 8, its first, third, fourth and fifth, quire 9, its second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and tenth, quire 10, its first, third, fourth, eighth, ninth and tenth, quire 11 wants its eighth and ninth, quire 13, its first and last, quire 14, its first, quire 15, its first, third and fourth, quire 17, its fourth, quire 18, its tenth, quire 19, its first, quire 20, its ninth. Catchwords agree, no quire signatures or pagination, but contemporary foliation in roman numerals and then in arabic numerals by a later hand. Folio 168v. is blank.


Condition: Repairs have been made to the vellum in many corners.

Deco desc: red, and blue rubrics; caps alternately red, with blue penwork, blue, with red penwork; sixteen initials (from 70 x 70 to 35 x 30mm.) in gold, blue, red, mauve, and white tracery; ten historiated initials with the same colouring, portraying Stephen (10v.), John the Evangelist (13v.), Innocents (16v.), a saintÕs head (22v.), Purification (26r.), Matthew (32v.), Tiburtius, Valerianus and Maximus (38r.), Paul (56r.), Lawrence (62v.), dragon (118v.).
